ARDEX Provides an Education in Tile Fixing

Queen Mary's School Pool

With an outstanding portfolio of swimming pool installations, ARDEX UK worked in partnership with Westfield Interiors of Wetherby, to provide the ideal tiling solution for the refurbishment of the swimming pool at Queen Mary’s School in Yorkshire.

Queen Mary’s School is an independent girls’ school for day and boarding pupils from ages
3 through to 16, with co-educational nursery and pre prep departments for children between 3 and 7 years. Established in 1925, the school moved 22 years ago to Baldersby Park near Topcliffe, North Yorkshire. A Grade I listed Palladian country house, the school is set in 50 acres of landscaped grounds and offers its pupils a wide range of academic, music, sporting and recreational activities.

The 190m² refurbishment was started with some of the pool wall areas being rendered with ARDEX AM 100 Rapid Hardening One Coat Tiling Render. The fast track properties of ARDEX AM 100 ensure that tiles can be fixed just 2 hours after application, which provides a time saving of almost 3 weeks compared to a traditional render.

Once the existing floor surround tiles were removed, the falls were improved with an application of ARDEX S 21 bedding mortar incorporating screeding sand. ARDEX S 21 was chosen as only a thin screed was required, and because it has rapid hardening properties, the floor tiles could be fixed at the earliest opportunity (approximately 3 hours).

The mosaic tiles were supplied by Waxman Ceramic Tiles, and were fixed with ARDEX X 77 MICROTEC® Flexible Floor & Wall Tile Adhesive. Outstanding performance is guaranteed with ARDEX X 77 MICROTEC®, as it has been developed to achieve the slip resistance standard but with a tile that weighs twice as much as the testing standard requires, allowing for heavier, larger tiles to be used without slipping. ARDEX X 77 MICROTEC® also achieves an open time of up to 60 minutes before tiles need to be fixed, providing greater fixing efficiency over large areas. Additional user benefits of ARDEX X 77 MICROTEC® include excellent application properties and high yield, and suitability for use on both internal and external applications.

ARDEX-FLEX FL Stormy Mist Rapid Setting Flexible Grout, with built-in admix, was chosen to fill the tile joints. In addition to offering a colour palette of 32 colours, ARDEX-FLEX tile grouts also incorporate flexibility, water repellence, ease of application and dirt resistance, which combine to ensure the perfect conclusion to any tiling installation.

On completion of the project, Paul Angove of Westfield Interiors commented, “Many tile fixing products promise premium levels of performance, yet few actually deliver them. However, with ARDEX, we know that we are using a tried and tested product range that will assure unparalleled on-site results, without compromise”.
