Tiling System Solution from ARDEX Proves Perfect for Lakeside
ARDEX UK, the leading supplier of premium quality flooring and tiling products, were delighted to be involved in the massive £30 million refurbishment project at the Lakeside Shopping Centre, Thurrock.
This vast refurbishment project, covering some 18,500m² of shopping mall floor, required a single system solution from one supplier, for the fast track renovation of the sub-floor and installation of the new tiling. By combining their joint experience within the commercial sector, ARDEX and Wilson & Wylie Contracts, one of the country’s leading wall and floor tiling contractors, delivered the perfect system solution.
In order for the commercially important shopping hours not to be disrupted, it was necessary to complete the work overnight. This involved preparing and pre-smoothing the existing terrazzo sub-floor using ARDEX’s multi-award winning latex smoothing compound ARDITEX. For over 30 years ARDITEX has proved its reputation in the marketplace by delivering a cost effective, high performance smoothing solution in virtually all types of commercial and domestic environments.
Throughout the malls, large format tiles were fixed to the newly smoothed surface using ARDEX-FLEX S 38 flexible rapid hardening floor tile bedding mortar. A wealth of features, including excellent adhesion, pourable consistency, and 30 minutes tile adjustability time allowed solid bedding to be easily and rapidly achieved.
ARDEX S 16 grey rapid setting wall and floor tile adhesive with ARDEX E 90 admix, was specified to fix the feature tiles. Ideal for use in dry or intermittently damp locations, ARDEX S 16 incorporates unique ARDEX ‘Rapidry Formula’ technology which binds the mix water within the adhesive ensuring tiles can be grouted or trafficked only 3 hours after fixing. The wall tiles within the toilet linked corridors were fixed using ARDEX-FLEX 5000 white flexible tile adhesive, and the joints grouted with ARDEX-FLEX FS flexible and dirt resistant tile grout.
The majority of the remaining tiles were grouted utilising ARDEX C 2 grey cement-based tile grout, in conjunction with ARDEX E 101 admixture. ARDEX C 2 is a very versatile grout that is easy to apply and clean off and is suitable for tile joints 2mm or more in width.
