Major Refurb at Coopers Square in
Burton-On-Trent
Major changes have been taking place
at the Burton Shopping Centre, now renamed Coopers Square.
A multi-million pound refurbishment has transformed
the old-fashioned open precinct into a modern, fully
enclosed shopping centre.
The most difficult part of the project
was replacing all the floors throughout using ceramic
tiles. Technical advice and products for both the sub-floor
preparation and for fixing the tiles were supplied by
ARDEX UK Limited. ARDEX have a wealth of experience
in providing specialist flooring solutions in this type
of situation and have been involved in large and small
shopping centre projects throughout the UK for many
years.
All the old flag stones, together
with the sand and soil below, had to be removed right
down to the concrete foundation, which then had to be
repaired and strengthened. Where necessary a new high
strength concrete screed was then laid in 10ft x 10ft
sections, using ARDEX
EB 2, with expansion joints which allow for minor
movements in the structure. The ceramic tiles were then
able to be installed using ARDEX-FLEX
S38 and ARDEX
S 21 bedding mortar and ARDEX
GK grey rapid setting grout.
As contractors had to maintain access
along the malls to each individual shop during the day,
the sections of tiling being worked on at one time were
not necessarily next to each other, therefore, flatness
and maintenance of levels were extremely important and
made easier by the use of the ARDEX bedding mortars.
Detailed measurements had to be made to ensure the tiles
were all level when the different areas of flooring
were joined up.
ARDEX Technical Services Department
was on call during the project to offer detailed product
information and advice.
